Climate Change Activist Groups

The effects of climate change are of major concern across the world. Concerned individuals fear the human contribution to climate change is responsible for droughts, natural disasters, habitat loss and will eventually lead to the destruction of the planet. Climate change activist groups lobby governments and raise public awareness about climate issues. Some groups provide suggestions on how to conserve the Earth's natural resources and live sustainably.
  1. Greenpeace

    • Greenpeace was established in 1971 by a group of activists protesting against nuclear testing on Amchitka Island in Alaska. Their campaign led to the signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Greenpeace is now represented in 40 countries with over 2.8 million supporters. Their main aim is to investigate, document and raise awareness on issues leading to environmental damage. They lobby governments, stage protests and promote environmentally-friendly goods and services to consumers.

    Stop Climate Chaos Coalition

    • The Stop Climate Chaos Coalition (SCCC) is a conglomerate group of over 100 diverse organizations aimed at tackling climate change issues. The coalition consists of over 11 million members from organizations including Friends and the Earth, Oxfam, Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and Women's Institute. The coalition utilizes their member strength to lobby governments to implement policies to limit countries' contributions to global warming. Suggestions provided by the coalition to achieve this include an end to coal mining and investing in a green economy.

    United States Climate Action Partnership

    • The United States Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) operates in a similar fashion to the SCCC. They are a coalition of major corporations including Shell, British Petroleum, General Electric, General Motors and Pepsi. USCAP utilize their financial and political clout to influence legislative decisions made by the U.S. federal government concerning climate change. The USCAP devised a document titled "A Call for Action," containing proposed solutions to curb the U.S. contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

    Climate Group

    • The Climate Group was formed in 2004 and aims to develop and promote environmentally-friendly technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This includes light-emitting diode (LED) lamps, electric vehicles and solar technology. The Climate Group is a not-for-profit organization with operations in North America, Australia, India, China and Europe.
