Health Hazards of Copper Sulfate Solution

Otherwise known as bluestone, cupric sulfate or blue vitrol, copper sulfate is registered for use in solution form in the United States as a fungicide, herbicide and algaecide, per the PAN Pesticides Database. Copper sulfate solution is harmful when swallowed, inhaled or when it comes into contact with the eyes, so take adequate precautions when using it.
  1. Heat

    • While copper sulfate solution is not flammable, if heated above 400 degrees Celsius it may emit harmful fumes. Only use copper sulfate solution in a well-ventilated area, and use face masks when appropriate.

    Consumtion

    • Copper sulfate solution is toxic when swallowed. Joel Goldschmidt, of OldBridgeChem.com, advises you to drink lots of milk or water to induce vomiting, and to call your local poison center or hospital if you ingest copper sulfate solution.

    Skin Contact

    • Although copper sulfate solution is not regarded as being a skin irritant, Goldschmidt advises you to wash exposed skin with soap and water if it comes into contact with the solution.

    Eye Contact

    • If it comes into contact with your eyes, copper sulfate solution is an irritant. If left for 48 hours, it may cause irreversible damage, so wash your eyes thoroughly with water for 15 minutes if contact occurs. Keep your eyes open while washing and call a doctor.

    Public Water Systems

    • Copper sulfate solution may be dangerous if allowed into public water systems. It is toxic to both fish and plants, so always follow local and national regulations when disposing of waste or excess.
