How to Save Water & Power

Limiting your water and power use will help the environment and keep your wallet full at the same time. Using less water protects lakes, streams and other bodies of water. Fossil fuels are used to create electricity and can be a source of environmental pollution, so the less electricity we use, the less pollution we create. You can make simple changes to save water and electricity that won't compromise your lifestyle.

Instructions

  1. How to Save Water

    • 1

Wait until your dishwasher or clothes washer is full before using. Running appliances only when full can save 500 to 1,000 gallons of water per month. Use cold water for laundry instead of hot water.

    • 2

Inspect your home for water leaks that could be costing hundreds of gallons per month. Scan your monthly water bill to check for excess water use. One leaky faucet can waste gallons of water every day.

    • 3

Water your lawn or plants in the morning or evening, when temperatures are lower. Watering in the afternoon is sometimes futile, as the water quickly evaporates.

    How to Save Power

    • 4

Unplug appliances like TVs, computers and gaming consoles when you won't be using them for a period of time. Some appliances use electricity even when turned off.

    • 5

Clean heating and air conditioning vents to keep them free from obstructions. Placing furniture in front of vents will make the system work harder to heat or cool your home. Close all doors and windows when you turn on the heating or air conditioning unit to prevent air from escaping.

    • 6

Open blinds during the daytime to use sunlight for warmth and lighting. Take advantage of natural light and only use artificial lighting in the evening or at night.
