How to Minimize Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a naturally occurring series of minerals which were once commonly used in building due to strength and inflammability functions. However, since the 1920s, asbestos has been recognized as causing respiratory problems due to inhalation of the fine silicate particles. Many occupations, such as plumbing and construction, still cause contact with asbestos, although the U.S. has regulations requiring that employers take safety precautions to protect workers. By following certain procedures, you can reduce your risk of exposure to asbestos.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear protective clothing. Use a respirator face mask, eye goggles, gloves, a head covering and coveralls.

    • 2

Shower immediately after working with any materials that contain asbestos, and wash all clothing that may have been exposed.

    • 3

Keep the asbestos-containing material wet while you are working with it or in contact with it. This will prevent it from entering the air and being inhaled. Avoid cutting asbestos, if possible.

    • 4

Dispose of asbestos safely at the work site's asbestos disposal area. If there is no such site, consult your state's environmental department on how to dispose of it.
