Water Treatments That Do Not React With Aluminium
To prevent contamination of drinking water, proper treatment is required. There are different devices and techniques that can be used to treat contaminated water. The types of contaminants that you want to remove will depend on the type of device or treatment to use. For instance, if you want to remove arsenic or fluoride with a device or technique that does not react with aluminum, the activated alumina technique, aluminum sulfate and hydrated lime can be used.-
Activated Alumina
-
Activated alumina is a form of aluminum oxide that is placed into a cartridge in which the contaminated water passes through. The alumina in the cartridge absorbs contaminants, such as arsenic and fluoride from the water. Like other filter cartridges, the activated alumina needs to be changed once in a while, as the device can accumulate bacteria.
Aluminum Sulphate and Hydrate Lime
-
Aluminum sulphate is a coagulation treatment water treatment that binds particles in the water and coagulates them. By coagulating the particles, they are unable to pass through the filter into the water. This type of process also removes aluminum and does not react with the aluminum. After the aluminum sulphate treatment, hydrated lime treatment is recommended. This helps increase in the pH, since the aluminum sulphate lowers the pH due to the acidity of the compound. Water systems usually keep water at a pH around 7; anything lower is too acidic.
Hydrophilic Nanoparticles
-
Super-hydrophilic nanoparticles are used in water treatment to make a flow path (a small canal for the water), while rejecting the salt content. The process works like reverse osmosis, making the water more permeable. The particles also create a membrane that is resistant to organic particle and bacteria growth or filtration, which enables water to filter through by picking up impurities. The nanoparticles do not react with aluminum or other metals, making this a safe water treatment technique.
Ion Exchange
-
The ion exchange process is used to remove salts and metals from the water by using a tank with small beads of resin. The beads absorb positively and negatively charged ions from the water until all available sites on the resin are filled.
Granulated Activated Carbon Treatment
-
Granular activated carbon is made of particles that are a millimeter in size that are arranged in a column throughout the water. The particles absorb contaminants, as well as dissolved organic matter in the water.
