The Pros and Cons of Windmills

Wind is a renewable energy source, and a windmill is the device used to capture the kinetic energy of wind and convert it into power. While many people celebrate the eco-friendly technology, some drawbacks to windmills exist as well.
  1. Pros: Health

    • Windmills do not emit greenhouse gasses, so it is a clean and natural source of fuel. The energy generated by wind turbines does not jeopardize human, animal or environmental health.

    Pros: Efficiency

    • Using a windmill to power a residence or commercial building saves money on electricity. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, wind is one of the least expensive renewable energy sources available, costing an average of between 4 and 6 cents per kilowatt-hour in 2010. Accordingly, people who use windmills to power their homes or offices see reductions in their electric bills.

    Cons: Investment

    • One of the drawbacks to windmill technology is that it requires an initial and substantial investment to set up the system. Users must purchase the technology, and a residential windmill can cost around $15,000 in 2010.

    Cons: Noise

    • The DOE reports that windmills can generate a lot of noise due to the rotating of the fan blades.
