Radon and Installation

Contained within the soil and earth below a building, radon is derived from underground deposits of uranium. Radon gas can infiltrate a building, causing illness over time, including lung cancer.
  1. Function

    • If a building has been tested for radon and the results are high levels of radon gas, a contractor is recommended to install a radon reduction solution. Depending on how the building is constructed---with or without a basement for example---the contractor can then determine the best course of action.

    Considerations

    • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests an installation that stops radon from entering the building completely, rather than lessening the amounts within the building already. One technique is soil suction, which brings radon gas up from the soil through piping for dispersal.

    Warning

    • Radon gas is radioactive and damaging to organisms. If any radon gas is suspected on a property, it is imperative to get your house tested immediately in order to keep people and surrounding organisms healthy.
