Laboratory Fumigation

Fumigation is required in laboratories to remove biological material that can cause disease. The type of fumigant used and the type of system depend on the type of laboratory.
  1. Ventilation Systems

    • Laboratory fumigation systems must work in concert with laboratory building ventilation systems, which usually requires the supervision of the building engineer. All ventilation systems must be turned off during laboratory fumigation.

    Fumigant System

    • The type of fumigant system depends on the toxicity levels and the ability to remove the needed fumes. For instance, formaldehyde is an effective fumigant; however, this chemical is toxic to humans, and therefore, other fumigants should be taken into consideration.

    Circulation During Fumigation

    • Laboratories are required to have some sort of circulating device, such as a fan, that is operating during the fumigation process. Circulation allows fumigation to take place throughout all parts of the laboratory. In addition, all cabinet doors should be opened to allow the fumigant to enter.

    Laboratory Concealment

    • During fumigation, the laboratory must be closed and sealed from any other areas. Placing heavy-duty tape on the open areas of doors can prevent leakage.
