How to Prevent Iron Bacteria in a Basement Drainage System

- Chlorine bleach
- Water
- Large containers
- Siphon
- Hose
- Long-handled scrub brush

Mix together 1 gallon of chlorine bleach and 50 gallons of water in a large container. Reduce the quantity if you do not have a container that large (an example of a smaller amount would be 1 quart of bleach and 12.5 gallons of water).

Put a siphon device in the container and connect it to a hose.

Squeeze the siphon pump to start the flow of cleaner. Hold the hose and spray over the entire area to be cleaned. Save some solution for the drain after you clean.

Scrub with a long-handled scrub brush toward the drain.

Rinse the area with plain water.

Pour the rest of the solution down the drain.
