While the addition of fluoride was once perceived as a public health achievement in protecting people against dental decay, now a number of adverse health effects appear to be linked to the ingestion of fluoride, according to Dr. Ted Schettler, a science director of the Science and Environmental Health Network.   Log onto your computer and establish an Internet connection. Go to the Natural Resources Defense Council website.

  Scroll through the list of brands of bottled water and look carefully at the chart. Under the ''Contaminant and Level Found'' section look under ''Other.'' You should find the level of fluoride found in parts per million (ppm).

  Call the the water manufacturer's phone number if you wish to verify such information or if the fluoride content is not available for a particular brand. Such information should be readily available to the customer service representatives answering the phone.

  Some specific brands of water are not available in stores.

  Shop for the fluoride-free or reduced-fluoride bottled water. Some of these brands are available in stores, while you must purchase others online.
