Uses for Old Bicycles
There are several uses for old bicycles, many requiring only a small amount of effort. Several companies accept bicycle donations for refurbishment or to recycle their parts and frames. Quality bicycles can be converted into electric motor bicycles, which are legally allowed on bicycle paths and lanes. Bicycle parts and components can become artwork or garden sculpture or pretty much anything else you can imagine.-
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
-
Bicycles are manufactured of several recyclable materials including aluminum, plastic and steel. The parts of a bicycle will last a long time if used outdoors as part of an art piece or a trellis for climbing vines. Old bicycle tires make excellent chain-stay protectors on new bicycles--cut to fit and attach with zip ties. Small amounts of scrap aluminum can reap big economic rewards. Use an old bicycle as an indoor training bicycle.
Donate or Sell
-
Several organizations accept donations of used bicycles for charitable causes. Recycle-A-Bicycle, a New York City non-profit, helps inner-city youth earn bicycles and gain life experience by learning bicycle skills and interning and working at their bike stores. Other major cities across the U.S. have similar organizations to divert bicycles from the waste stream and to get them to kids and adults who need reliable transportation. Garage sales, local thrift stores and pawnshops can turn old bicycles into cash.
Build a Zero Emission Vehicle
-
Many old bicycles can readily become zero emission vehicles with an electric-assist conversion kit. Some communities even apply ZEV credits to electric bicycles. Electric-assist bicycles typically travel under 20 miles per hour and have a motor no greater than 750 watts. This ensures that no state defines these vehicles as mopeds or motorcycles. Many local bicycle shops have the necessary knowledge and tools needed to complete an electric-assist bicycle conversion.
