OSHA Standards for Occupants of a High School Science Lab
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates the design and organization of science labs, including those in high schools. Many schools use the OSHA Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) and documents provided by other agencies, such as the American National Standard Institute, to develop safety rules. OSHA standards focus on the handling of chemicals and equipment.-
Hazardous Chemicals
-
OSHA's requirements related to hazardous chemicals are based on recommendations from the National Research Council. If the toxicity of a substance cannot be determined, consider it a compound toxic and treat accordingly. Label and store chemicals based on risk levels. Inventory all chemicals annually. Follow permissible exposure limits using the OSHA-PELS table as a guide (see Resources). Demonstrate proper use of handling equipment, such as a fume hood, and test students on the information. Before purchasing any substances, obtain information on proper handling, storage and disposal.
Ventilation
-
Per OSHA, a laboratory hood must accommodate two people and provide 2.5 linear feet of hood space per person. Work processed inside the hood radius must begin at least 6 inches from the front edge of the hood. Keep the hood sash closed at all times when working within the perimeter of the hood. The velocity of the hood face must fall between 60 to 100 linear feet per minute for air replacement. Suggested ventilation for every room is 4 to 12 air changes per hour.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
-
Personal Protective Equipment includes safety goggles, face shields, hard hats, gloves, respirators, lab aprons, lab coats and proper footwear. OSHA requires a written hazard assessment so the proper PPE can be arraigned in advance of a project. This written record must indicate training necessary for use of the safety equipment. The PPE standards do not work as a substitute for engineering controls, such as fume hoods, to protect individuals from exposure. Both protocols must be followed.
