How to Store Polyester Resin

Polyester resins are the hydrocarbon chains formed by acids and sugar alcohol. They have many uses, but are not generally suited for in-home use. They can form an adhesive strong enough to bind the components of a car's fiberglass body together. They can also create a leak-proof sealant used for boats. Even though polyester resins are useful in many ways, they can also be dangerous if you do not store them correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a storage area for the polyester resin. The area must be out of direct sunlight and away from anything that may ignite the volatile resin (a fireproof cabinet is the best option). Store it under lock and key where no children will have the opportunity to lay their hands on the resin.

    • 2

Label the resin container as highly flammable. This will warn anyone who tries to use the polyester resin.

    • 3

Cover the container that houses your polyester resin with a polyurethane sheet. The resin can remain exposed to open air, but the sheet of polyurethane will reduce the risk of spillage.

    • 4

Clean any polyester resin spills with an absorbent cloth. Do not leave spills unattended in your storage facility. Soak the cloth with water before you dispose of it.

    • 5

Maintain a low temperature (less than 68 degrees Fahrenheit) in the storage facility. The low temperature preserves the resin for a longer period of time. But you should never store resin for more than six months.
