How to Monitor for Benzene

Benzene is an organic chemical that is colorless and highly flammable. This compound is a known carcinogen, or cancer-producing agent. Benzene is an industrial solvent used in the production of drugs, plastics, synthetic rubber and dyes. It is also a common constituent of crude oil. Areas and individuals at risk for contamination from this chemical may require extensive monitoring to prevent fires and disease. Many devices are available to aid in that process.

Instructions

  1. Badge

    • 1

Wear the badge monitoring kit on your clothing anywhere you believe benzene exposure might occur, such as work. The badge provides passive monitoring of personal exposure. Follow the directions provided with the kit for information on positive results.

    • 2

Produce the required breath samples using the equipment provided.

    • 3

Ship the samples to the laboratory for analysis following the instructions provided with the kit. The lab will create a report on the amount of exposure, if any, and send the details back to you.

    Ambient Level Multi-Gas Analyzer

    • 4

Set up the multi-gas handheld analyzer using the directions provided by the manufacturer as a guideline.

    • 5

Walk through any areas that may contain benzene contamination.

    • 6

Send the results for analysis via the communication apparatus provided with the monitor. Many of these units offer wireless communication.

    Benzene Electronics Sensor

    • 7

Connect the compact, extractive gas monitoring system following the instructions provided with the product. Some of these units connect to the walls or outlets.

    • 8

Set up the control system as required. Units of this nature provide a programmable logic controller or multi-channel controller.

    • 9

Program the alarm system that comes with the unit. This sensor has a remote alarm system that alerts the company monitoring it of possible contamination.
