What Is Environmental Monitoring?

Environmental monitoring is the practice of evaluating the effects of industry on the environment. It ensures that the laws and regulations which protect the public, as well as the environment, are properly applied and enforced.
  1. Air Quality

    • Taking air samples and testing it for toxins ensures it is safe to breathe. The amount of pesticides and fumigation particles in the atmosphere should be within legal limits.

    Groundwater Quality

    • The source of groundwater contamination is identified, and a solution to prevent further contamination is implemented.

    Surface Water Quality

    • Encouraging effective agricultural practices to reduce pesticide runoff is important. Violators must implement new waste management procedures to meet water standard guidelines.

    Testing

    • Air, water and soil samples are tested for contaminants in laboratories using analytical methods including atomic absorption spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectroscopy.

    Considerations

    • Despite the laws and regulations, corporations and private citizens may not properly dispose of waste. More recycling centers and harsher penalties for violations may reduce environmental damage.
