Health Effects of High Electromagnetic Fields
An electromagnetic field is a field that is created when magnetic forces and electric forces of charged bodies interact. Everyone is exposed to weak magnetic fields and electric fields, at work and at home, from domestic appliances, the transmission and generation of electricity, broadcasting and telecommunications, and industrial equipment, says the World Health Organization. However, those exposed to high levels may experience certain health effects.-
General Effects
-
According to the World Health Organization, some symptoms have been reported by people who have been exposed to high and low levels of electromagnetic fields. These include headaches, loss of libido, anxiety, fatigue, depression and suicide, and nausea.
Pregnancy Issues
-
There is no concrete evidence to suggest that low levels of electromagnetic energy will cause pregnancy complications. However, those working in the electronics industry may be at risk because they are often exposed to higher levels. Such pregnancy complications are said to include spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, malformations, and congenital diseases, according the the World Health Organization.
Cataracts
-
Those who often work around high levels of microwave radiation are at risk for experiencing cataracts and eye irritation. According to the World Health Organization, those who are exposed to only low levels will not experience these effects.
Depression and Hypersensitivity
-
Those who are hypersensitive to electromagnetic fields may experience certain effects when exposed to high electromagnetic energy. The World Health Organization states that these symptoms are aches and pains, epileptic seizures, headaches, convulsions, depression, sleeping disorders, and lethargy.
