Health Impact of Mold

Fungi play a vital role in breaking down dead matter and contributing to the nitrogen cycle. However, certain types of fungi can have a negative health impact on the lungs and the skin of those exposed to fungi, fungi toxins and spores.
  1. Mycotoxins

    • Mycotoxins are toxins released specifically by mold. Many indoor molds release mycotoxins that can interfere with a person's ability to breathe. Water damage on paper and drywall can lead to black mold, a mold that releases these toxins.

    Lungs

    • In addition to causing a difficulty breathing, mold can get inside the lungs, causing an allergic reaction. This problem can lead to respiratory tract infections and often must be corrected with surgery.

    Toxicity

    • Children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems can be susceptible to mold toxicity, which can cause symptoms like vomiting, difficulty breathing, burning eyes, a sore throat and skin irritation.

    Severe Symptoms

    • Severe cases of mold toxicity can lead to headaches, memory loss, chronic fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations, swelling in the torso and stomach, muscle cramps and joint pain.

    Food

    • Moldy food, especially certain types of mold on cheese, can cause an upset stomach and can also contain harmful bacteria like E coli.
