Safety Rules for Chemical Storage
Chemicals are both a blessing and a curse. When used improperly they cause great harm; yet, they are an essential component of modern society. Therefore, it is essential that they be stored properly when not in use.-
Hazards
-
There is no such thing as a safe chemical. According to the Royal Society of Chemicals (RSC), these substances, therefore, are categorized in terms of hazards and risks.
Significance
-
The risks presented by various chemical substances can be reduced by practicing some common-sense storage procedures. Liquids for example, should only be stored in unbreakable or double-strength containers.
Flammable Materials
-
Chemicals that are either flammable or carry a risk of explosion are better stored in approved flammable-materials storage cabinets or rooms if more than 10 gallons of the substance are present.
Interactions
-
Some compounds become extremely volatile when they come into contact with other chemicals. Therefore, all non-compatible hazard classes should be stored separately.
Warnings
-
Chemicals should never be stored on the floor. Keep poisons and acids in separate storage cabinets. Do not store above eye level. Be on guard for leaks or extreme changes in storage temperature.
Considerations
-
Never buy more chemicals than you expect to use.
