Types of Non Chlorine Bleach

Chlorine bleach is not the only chemical you can use as a fabric whitener and disinfectant. Hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate and sodium percarbonate are examples of oxygen-containing bleaches that can be equally effective and safer to use, although they might take longer to work.
  1. Ultra-Concentrated Oxygen Bleaches

    • The most concentrated oxygen bleaches are the most effective, most expensive and most versatile. They contain 80 percent to 100 percent oxygen bleach, usually sodium percarbonate. Oxy-Boost, Stain Solver, Shout Oxy Power and Bissell Deep Cleaning Booster are examples.

    Concentrated Oxygen Bleaches

    • Oxygen bleaches containing 40 percent to 70 percent sodium percarbonate are cheaper but less effective. Oxiclean, Chlorox Oxi Magic, All Oxi Active and Oxygen8 are examples of this group.

    Oxygen Bleaches With Additives

    • Oxygen bleaches for laundry use often contain fillers, surfactants and 20 percent to 40 percent bleach. The additives boost cleaning ability and lower cost. Examples include White Wave, Oxygen Bleach and Natural Oxygen Bleach.

    Cleaners with Less Oxygen Bleach

    • Most oxygen bleach products actually contain less than 25 percent of this ingredient. They include dish detergents such as Bi-O-Kleen and Bio Pac; toilet cleaners such as Oxy-Flush Toilet Bowl Cleanser; and deck and siding cleaners such as Wolman.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Hydrogen peroxide comes ready to use as a liquid. It usually comes in 3 percent to 7 percent solutions. It's cheap but only has a shelf life of a few months. Some alternative bleaches products contain hydrogen peroxide as an ingredient.
