Benzoic acid is a white powdery chemical that is used as a food preservative and to make other chemicals. Benzoic acid is only a slightly hazardous to human health but has the potential to damage the environment if released.
  1. Health Hazards

    • The dust might irritate the nose and eyes. If heated, the fumes might irritate the skin and respiratory system.

    Physical Hazards

    • The powder is combustible. Concentrated dust can cause an explosive mixture in air. In a fire, the fumes might form an explosive mixture with air.

    Protective Equipment

    • Wear safety glasses and gloves when handling the chemical. Wear respiratory protection if handling large quantities of fine powder.
