When choosing a detergent, make sure to look for non-phosphate or low phosphate options. Phosphate levels in streams and lakes can be very harmful to fish and other wildlife.

Never throw away oil. A single quart of oil can contaminate thousands of gallons of water.

Learn the proper way to dispose of hazardous wastes like oil, paint, polishes, antifreeze, and strong household cleaning products. Your city or county officials should know the proper way to dispose of these kinds of products and you can contact them to find out.

If you use pesticides or fertilizer, try to use natural ones, or at minimum, reduce the amount you use. Pesticides and fertilizers can enter the water system from runoff from watering your lawn.
