Shower Curtain Alternative

The Environmental Protection Agency states that some of the chemicals found in vinyl shower curtains are hazardous air pollutants. Shower curtains that are great alternatives are made of hemp, cotton and EVA because they're free of chemicals and toxins.

  1. Hemp Shower Curtains

    • Hemp is from the unique range of the plant species called cannabis sativa L. Every part of the hemp plant can be used to make a product. The strong fibers of the hemp plant are used to make durable shower curtains. Hemp shower curtains are an ideal alternative for vinyl curtains because they're free of chemicals, pesticides, toxins and plastic. There are no toxic gases that come from hemp shower curtains. Other benefits include their resistance to mold and mildew, and they hold their shape and dry quickly. Biodegradable dyes are used for the organic hemp shower curtains. Some of the colors are Desert Sand, Ivory, Sage and Earth Brown.

    Cotton Shower Curtains

    • Shower curtains made of 100 percent cotton are another alternative to vinyl shower curtains. Some cotton shower curtains are made of woven cotton that expands when wet so water can't seep through. Cotton fabric is bleached in hydrogen peroxide and no toxic chemicals or chlorine is used. Organic cotton shower curtains have a natural color because of the unbleached cotton yarns. Most cotton shower curtains are very strong and last much longer than vinyl. Birch fabric shower curtains are made of 75% percent cotton and 25% lines. They're also made without chemicals.

    EVA Shower Curtains

    • EVA, or ethylene vinyl acetate, shower curtains are an alternative plastic for PVC shower curtains. They're allergen- and chlorine-free. EVA shower curtains are also resistant to mold and mildew and are bio-degradable, which means they decompose naturally. EVA doesn't have phthalate plasticizers so EVA curtains are considered non-toxic. These shower curtains are better for the environment and your health. There are many attractive-looking EVA shower curtains that come in designs such as ducks, frogs, nature and bubbles.
