Anti-Fungal Cures

Fungus can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. It can be extremely difficult to get rid of. For some individuals, fungal outbreaks are a recurring problem. You can try natural remedies, over-the-counter treatments or prescription medicine. Fungus infections include athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm; they also afflict the nails and hair.
  1. Tea Tree Oil

    • Apply drops of tea tree oil to fingernails and toenails three times a day during fungus outbreaks or once a day as a preventative measure. Alternatively for prevention or treatment, add tea tree oil to skin products you apply daily to your hands and feet (four drops per six ounces).

    Garlic

    • Rub mashed garlic into fungus on toe and fingernails. Make sure you wash the area and dry it thoroughly first. Apply garlic several times daily, including bedtime. Alternatively, soak the infected area in a mixture of lemon and chamomile tea; toss in garlic juice or a clove of garlic for added effect.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar is one of the most effective treatment options available. Add one or two cups to bath water or a tub of warm water, and soak the affected areas three times a day.

    Over the Counter Medications

    • Look for over-the-counter medications that contain terbinafine, clotrimazole or miconazole. Creams and ointments tend have stronger ingredients, but powders help reduce moisture, which contributes to fungal infection. Consider a combination of a cream and powder to reduce irritation and treat the infection.

    Prescription Medications

    • If nonprescription treatments fail, see a doctor. Antibiotics are sometimes necessary to eradicate fungus. They generally must be taken for several weeks or months. Do not discontinue treatment too soon, even if symptoms disappear, as the fungus could be dormant in your body.

    Prevention

    • Keep in mind that nail fungus thrives in dark, warm places. You can pick up infections in gyms and changing rooms. Keep your hands and feet clean and dry; use anti-moisturizing powder if necessary.
