How to Reduce Pollutants

Pollutants are released into the environment and can cause harm to the planet as well as human health. Common pollutants include carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, particle matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Making some small changes can dramatically reduce your carbon footprint.

Change your driving habits. Each time that you drive your car, you are releasing pollutants into the air. Consider carpooling, riding a bike, walking or relying on public transportation. If you do drive, make sure that your car meets emissions standards mandated by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Make adjustments to the type of products you use in your home. Select products that do not contain volatile organic compounds or have a reduced amount. Volatile organic compounds release gases into the air that can be harmful to the environment. Paints, cleaners and air fresheners can all contain these ingredients.

Rely on gas less. Burning fossil fuel can cause you to release pollutants into the environment. Mow your lawn with a push mower, move leaves with a rake instead of a leaf blower and shovel your snow in lieu of using a snow blower.

Reduce the amount of energy your home consumes. This can save you money on your electric bill as well as reduce pollution. Unplug electronics when they are not in use and turn off lights when you leave the room. Replace your bulbs with energy saver types and insulate your home. Putting in low-flow shower heads and programmable thermostats can also help.

Remember to recycle. Separate your glass, paper and aluminum products for recycling. Purchase items that have gone through recycling as well.
