Harmful Effects of Tanning Salons

Most of us enjoy getting a good tan from time to time, and since summer is only few months long, some go to tanning salons to stay bronze throughout the year. We like the relaxation and how it makes us feel--but be aware: there are several health risks that come with the price of looking bronze and relaxed.
  1. Melanoma

    • Large amounts of Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) may lead to skin cancer because the UV rays penetrate deep into the skin, damaging fibers and elasticity. The more exposure you have, the more likely the damage would be beyond cellular repair, and a tumor can result.

    Sunburns

    • The UV radiation from tanning beds can cause sunburns. If you burn frequently, you may be more at risk for developing skin cancer.

    Damages Skin

    • Indoor tanning can damage your skin and lead to premature aging. It causes your skin to become all leathery and tough and form wrinkles.

    Eye Problems

    • Indoor tanning may lead to eye damage. It can cause issues such as conjunctivitis and corneal problems, and the UV radiation may do serious harm to the retina and cornea.

    Immune System

    • If you over-expose yourself to the UV radiation in a tanning bed, you may find yourself having a weakened immune system, with your body less able to fight off colds and diseases.

    Psychological Addiction

    • Some people become addicted to tanning salons, and feel like they must continue to go to the tanning salon to get rid of their perceived physical flaws, be they extra pounds or pale skin.
