How to Start an Office Recycling Program

Recycling is great for the environment and it's something we all should take part in. You can make a big difference in the quality of the environment when you rally your co-workers to start recycling. And the easiest way to make that happen is to start an office recycling program.

Go through your trash. Before you start a recycling program, you need to know what you can actually recycle. Some common items found in an office building are newspapers, office paper, soda cans and bottles, cardboard boxes and printer cartridges. Other items like batteries, computers and large appliances can also be recycled, but those aren't usually as common.

Find out what kinds of collection containers you need. Bins are available to sit near desks and those make great collection containers for office paper. You might also have a bin in the break room or kitchen for plastic and aluminum. And don't forget that you'll need the large central collection containers. These are the large bins where people can dump their paper when their personal bin is full. Look around your office to see what you need and where you can put them.

Determine who will service your recycling needs. Find a company who can pick up your recyclable materials. And then, maybe your janitorial staff can help get the recyclable goods to the curb or wherever the company will pick everything up at.

Spread the word. Let everyone in the office know that you're recycling. You might also offer perks for people who are "caught" recycling. Most people are willing to recycle. It's up to you to make it convenient for them and to let them know about it.
