What is erthropenia?
Erythropoenia or anemia refers to a condition characterized by a deficiency in red blood cells (erythrocytes) or hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. This leads to a reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, resulting in insufficient oxygen delivery to body tissues and organs. As a consequence, individuals with erythropoenia may experience symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, pale skin, and other complications depending on the severity of the condition. Erythropoenia can have various underlying causes, including blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, bone marrow disorders, chronic diseases, and certain medications. Treatment typically involves addressing the underlying cause and implementing measures to increase red blood cell production or replenish hemoglobin levels.
