What is the function of vas deferens?
The vas deferens (plural vasa deferentia) is a muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory ducts. It forms part of the male reproductive system.
The vas deferens is a muscular tube with dense walls. It is about 30–45 centimetres long. They receive sperm from the epididymis, where they are stored and mature. The vasa deferentia pass through the inguinal canal and enter the pelvic cavity. They then travel along the posterior surface of the bladder and join the seminal vesicles to form the ejaculatory ducts.
The vasa deferentia contract during ejaculation to propel sperm through the ejaculatory ducts and out of the penis.
In some animals, the vasa deferentia also store sperm. In humans, the vasa deferentia are mainly used for transporting sperm. However, they can also store sperm for a short period of time.
The vasa deferentia are part of the male reproductive system and are essential for fertility.
