Workplace Health & Safety in Alberta: Ergonomics
-
Stocking of Goods
-
Part 12 of the OHS discusses general safety precautions as they relate to stocking and storage of goods, materials and equipment. Improper stocking of heavy loads can potentially cause injury to workers. The company should consider ergonomics in designing shelves and stacks, and providing access for loading and unloading.
Lifting and Handling Loads
-
Part 14 of the OHS talks about musculoskeletal injuries, its signs and symptoms, stages of injury and risk factors. Injuries often result from overexertion and overuse or repetitive motion. Such injuries can be prevented through an assessment of ergonomic hazards in the workplace. This part of the OHS also tackles the use of proper techniques for lifting, pulling and pushing to reduce the incidence of back pain.
Worker Information
-
Alberta Workplace Health & Safety provides several bulletins, manuals and booklets on ergonomics issues such as fatigue and safety, product design, carpal tunnel syndrome and lower back pain. Workers can obtain guidance and information to protect themselves from work-related injury.
