How to Give the Heimlich Maneuver to Someone in Bed

The Heimlich Maneuver is a procedure used to help choking victims. Done correctly, the procedure may dislodge the stuck item from the throat, allowing it to be expelled from the mouth. When the victim is standing, the procedure is done from behind. When the victim is in a bed and unable to stand, however, the technique must be done differently. Knowing how to do the Heimlich maneuver could mean the difference between life and death and is an important skill to learn.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the choking victim on his or her back. Straddle the person's upper thighs, if possible. If this is not possible because of the individual's girth or because you are not flexible enough to straddle, kneel between their legs instead.

    • 2

Place the heel of your palm above the person's navel but below the breastbone. Place your other hand on the top of that one.

    • 3

Straighten your arms and push in and upward on the victim's abdomen. Do this four times, initially. Remember that quick thrusts are best, as the purpose is to propel the object out of the airway.

    • 4

Check the victim's mouth for foreign matter that may have come up during the abdominal thrusts. Remove any matter that you see. Continue with the abdominal thrusts if the person still appears to be choking.

    • 5

If you are alone, do three sets of four thrusts on the victim, then quickly call 911 to bring aid if the object has not come out. The operator will likely direct you to continue with the Heimlich until emergency help arrives. If others are nearby, instruct someone to call 911 or the equivalent emergency services.
