Why should not try to give first aid a person who has broken his backbone?

If a person has broken their backbone, it is extremely important NOT to move them, as mishandling them can cause severe damage to the spinal cord. Incorrectly handling the person can result in paralysis or even death.

This is what you need to do instead:

- Call emergency services immediately. Explain that the person has a possible spinal injury.

- Provide basic first aid. Keep the person as calm as possible and apply pressure to any bleeding wounds.

- Do not move the person and try not to let them roll over. This could damage their spinal cord.

- Improvise a stretcher. Use a blanket, sheet, or sturdy piece of cardboard to carefully and slowly lift the person onto the stretcher. Make sure the person's head, neck and torso are in alignment.

- Transport the person to the hospital. Drive slowly and carefully. Avoid any bumps or sudden stops.

- Stay with the person and provide support. Be reassuring and talk to the person in a calm voice.
