Basic First Aid Kit Tools & Supplies for Students

A well-stocked first aid kit is an important tool in the quick treatment of injuries. During the course of their education, however, students won't always have access to a full first aid kit like they would if they were at home. To make sure that they are prepared for accidents which may occur, a smaller first aid kit can be created for students to keep in their backpacks or cars in case of emergency.
  1. Bandages and Gauze

    • Adhesive bandages of several sizes should be included, as should a roll of non-adhesive wrap bandages. Gauze material should also be included, both as pads and rolls. Be sure to include a small roll of medical tape as well, which can be used to secure both the gauze and wrap bandages.

    Ointments, Balms and Wipes

    • At least one tube of antibiotic ointment should be included in all first aid kits. Burn cream and an anti-itch balm should also be included. Antiseptic or alcohol wipes are essential for sterilization purposes.

    Cold Compress

    • A small cold compress can be a useful part of a student first aid kit, as these will allow the user to instantly apply cold to an area as a means to prevent swelling. Cold compresses are one-time use items, so after they have been activated a new one should be placed in the first aid kit.

    Safety Supplies

    • To keep the student who uses the first aid kit from becoming sick, a few basic safety supplies should be included as well. Non-latex gloves are important, as is a breathing shield in case a situation arises where rescue breathing is needed. Hand sanitizer can also be included for additional infection protection after first aid has been administered.

    Other Items

    • Aspirin or Ibuprofen should be placed in the first aid kit, as should a non-glass thermometer. Tweezers and a pair of dull-ended scissors are also useful additions.
Take note of school rules regarding medicines, should first aid kits be intended for in-school use.
