1
Contact a local American Red Cross or American Heart Association chapter. The American Red Cross website provides a Zip code driven search to locate chapters in your area. The American Red Cross offers classes for certification in first aid and CPR. The American Heart Association, or AHA, website allows visitors to search for AHA sponsored CPR classes and local first aid certification opportunities.

2
Determine the appropriate level of training and certification required. Classes are offered for a wide range of skills and necessities. First aid and CPR training geared specifically toward newborns would be appropriate for new parents and daycare providers, for example. In addition, classes are offered for certification in pet first aid and CPR.

3
Register for class. Class registration is available online, by phone or in person for the American Red Cross. Class fees are due at the time of registration. Registration for American Heart Association classes with local partners can be completed online. Payment will need to be arranged directly with the AHA certifying partner.
-
4
Maintain certification. American Red Cross certifications for first aid are valid for three years, while the certification for CPR is valid for one year. The American Heart Association provides CPR certification which is valid for two years.
