What Do You Learn in a First Aid Course?

First aid courses will vary somewhat because every instructor has his own method or style. You will learn basic skills that will help you through a disaster. These skills will help you until more experienced help can come to your aid. Even if you only remember bits and pieces, it will help in an emergency.
  1. Treating Burns

    • Learning to treat a burn covers things you do not do, as well as treatments. You cool a burned area but do not apply ice. Do not apply antiseptics, but do cover it with a sterile cloth. Leave a blister alone.

    Wound Care

    • Controlling bleeding, treating fractures and sprains will give you the basics in treating wounds.

    Splints

    • Learn to apply splints to hands, arms and legs. By using cardboard, newspaper or towels--among many ordinary objects--you can construct a splint.

    Head-to-toe

    • Determine the extent of injuries and what type of treatment is required. You will learn to check for airway obstruction, shock and excessive bleeding.

    Treat Hypothermia

    • Remove wet clothing; wrap it in a dry cover. Give the victim a warm, sweet drink. If it is possible, put the person in a warm bath.

    Treat Nasal Injuries

    • Keep the head forward and the airway open. Keep the victim calm to decrease blood flow.
