How to Help a Choking Victim
Choking, either experiencing it yourself or witnessing it, is a frightening thing. The sensation of not being able to breathe is one of the most traumatic there is. If you see someone choking, you want to help them immediately but most people might be frozen with uncertainty and, although well-intentioned, may not know how to administer successful first aid. 1
First determine if the person is actually choking. If they can speak, they can breathe, so they will be fine. If they cannot speak or cough, they will need your help.
-
2
If there are others around, ask someone to call 911 while you administer assistance. If you are alone, don't take the time to dial now. Do it later if necessary.
-
3
Stand slightly behind the choker and bring one arm around them to support them. Give five firm blows to their back to see if you can dislodge an item or clear the passage way. The strikes should be between the shoulder blades and you should hit with the heel of your hand.
-
4
If that doesn't work, proceed with some abdominal thrusts. Place your fist above the victims navel and wrap your other hand around your fist. Use five quick upward thrusts to clear the passageway.
-
5
Continue with back blows and abdominal thrusts until the object has cleared the throat area.
-
6
If the person loses consciousness, lay them on their back on the floor and sweep their mouth with your finger to check for any food or obstructions. Perform CPR chest compressions as that may dislodge the item. Recheck the mouth periodically.

7
Call 911 if the person turns blue and your attempts to help are unsuccessful.
