How to Remove an Egg Smell from Water

The egg smell usually found in water is actually hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide is commonly found in well water and has the characteristic egg smell and taste. It is produced when certain bacteria grow in groundwater.For removal of hydrogen sulfide from residential water sources, an activated carbon filter is recommended. Activated carbon particles have an extremely high surface area allowing chemical absorption to take place.

      Turn off the water supply to the kitchen sink or the location where drinking water is taken.This is usually done by closing the cold water valve underneath the sink.

      Disconnect the cold water supply to the faucet using the channel lock pliers. This supply line is usually a plastic or metal braided hose.

      Install the carbon filter by placing it underneath the sink in the back. It should be sitting upright and will have two connections. One connection is the water inlet and the second connection is the water outlet.

      Connect the cold water supply hose to the carbon filter inlet connection. Ensure the connection is tight by using the pliers.

      Connect the new water supply hose from the carbon filter outlet connection to the faucet inlet.Ensure the connections are tight using the pliers.Open the water supply valve and turn on the faucet. Let the water run through the filter for five minutes.This will remove any carbon fines (very small particles).
