How to Eliminate Bar Fruit Flies
Anyone who has owned or worked in a bar or nightclub has invariably had to deal with fruit flies. The little buggers are a fact of life, especially when there are copious amounts of sweet, intoxicating liquid to be had. However, fruit flies don't have to be a permanent fixture in your workplace. Although preventing fruit flies in the first place is easier than exterminating them, it can be done with a persistent effort. Follow the steps below, and the bugs will be sure to get out and stay out of your business.Things You'll Need
- Disinfectant
- Rags
- Mop
- 2 or 3 small fans

1
Clean the bar from top to bottom with disinfectants. Wipe down all surfaces whether they appear dirty or not. Remove and clean any racks, tables, or other movable furniture in order to get to those hard-to-reach places. Put covers on all the liquor spouts at closing. Move any mixers and fruit into a refrigerator. Take out all the trash at the end of every night and close the trash can lids firmly. As an extra measure, clean the trash bins themselves if possible, since they most likely have a sticky build-up that attracts fruit flies.

If the flies are gone, the customers will be happier and more plentiful. At the end of the night when everything is clean, take a cup and pour one or two fingers of cheap, sweet alcohol into it. In the morning, you should find a good amount of dead or very drunk flies in the cup. Also, hang sticky fly paper up when the customer's leave, and take it down when the bar opens. During work hours, be careful to limit spillage behind the bar.

3
Run steaming, hot water down the pipes to eliminate and prevent breeding, because some types of fruit flies breed in drainpipes. Continue cleaning and taking the precautions mentioned above also.

4
Use two or three small, oscillating fans to circulate the air behind the bar while it's open. This should keep most flies from bothering you or your customers, as they have a hard time flying in fanned air.
