What Are BPA-Free Bottles?

BPA-free bottles contain no Bisphenol A (BPA). The organic compound is used to create epoxy resins and polycarbonate plastic, which is sometimes used in bottles. In 2008, several nation's governments released reports that questioned the safety of BPA, which is also used in baby bottles. Some reports cited threats to young children, infants and fetuses. In 2010, Canada declared BPA a toxic substance and banned its use in baby bottles. BPA is also banned in the European Union. As of early 2011, it has not yet been banned in the U.S.

    • Medela is a common breast milk feeding and storage bottle that doesn't contain BPA. Breast milk can easily be pumped into these bottles before storing them in a cool area. You can feed the baby from the same storage bottle. Wash the bottles with warm water in the sink and allow them to air-dry. Don't microwave the bottle because chemicals could leach out.

    • Green to Grow baby bottles are made from PES plastic, which is BPA-free and has no lead, PVC or phthalates. The company created the brand after consistent government and news reports blasted the compound as being toxic. The company features a line of baby bottles including glass bottles, sippy cups, colic-relief bottles and colic-relief nipples.

    Born Free

    • Born Free specializes in using the safest materials in its baby products. The company produces two types of baby bottles, and both are BPA-free. The plastic variety has a built-in air vent that reduces the chance of colic. The traditional glass bottles have air vents to allow for steady pouring.

    Wee Go

    • Some of these bottles can break easily, so they are best for use in a baby seat or when you are holding the baby. Many of the bottles, however, have a rubber sleeve around them to prevent them from breaking and provide the baby with an easy grip. The sleeve can be put in the dishwasher for cleaning. You have to hand-wash the cap and ring.

    For Adults

    • Any glass bottle comes free of BPA, but sometimes adults need unbreakable bottles for fitness or other uses. The Klean Kanteen doesn't use aluminum, which is also criticized as being unhealthy. The Kanteen Classic was the first BPA-free stainless-steel water bottle. The company recommends people stop buying drinks in plastic containers and use stainless steel or glass instead.
