Melamine Poisoning Symptom

Melamine is a chemical used in adhesives, whiteboards, counter tops, plastics and dishware. It has also sometimes been found in contaminated food, such as powdered infant formula, frozen yogurt and pet food. According to the World Health Organization, these foods were likely all manufactured from milk contaminated with melamine. Melamine is not approved as a food additive by any national or international authorities and has many negative health effects.
  1. Kidney Infection

    • Melamine causes the formation of small crystals in the urinary tract, which can lead to kidney infections. Symptoms of kidney infections include fever, abdominal pain, pain in the back or side, and urinary problems. Kidney infections can be fatal if left untreated.

    Urinary Problems

    • Melamine consumption also causes urinary problems. People who have melamine poisoning may notice blood in their urine, or they may not urinate at all. In addition, urination may be painful, and people may experience a persistent urge to urinate.

    Skin or Eye Irritation

    • If people are exposed to melamine powder, they may suffer skin or eye irritation. Mucous membranes are especially susceptible to irritation. If a person is exposed to melamine, they should flush their eyes or skin liberally with water and then wash with a saline solution or soap and water.

    Respiratory Tract Irritation

    • People who inhale melamine powder may suffer irritation of the respiratory tract, which may include wheezing, a burning sensation and coughing. People who inhale melamine should immediately leave the area to seek fresh air and seek immediate medical attention.
