How Cold Should a Freezer Chest Be?

A freezer can postpone the expiration date of food, allowing you more leeway for when you decide to cook that roast. In order for the freezer to do its job, however, it must be kept at a safe temperature.
  1. Recommended Temperature

    • According to the United States Department of Agriculture, your freezer should remain at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit. A refrigerator/freezer thermometer is helpful to keep an eye on your freezer chest's temperature.

    Capacity

    • A full freezer holds its temperature best, according to West Virginia University (WVU). When you want to freeze something, place it in the coldest part of the freezer chest and do not freeze more than 3 pounds per cubic foot of your freezer within 24 hours.

    Packaging

    • Make sure you are using packaging that will keep out moisture and vapor. According to WVU, freezer wrap, freezer bags and aluminum foil will protect your food and prevent freezer burn.

    Expiration Date

    • According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, food will remain safe to eat if kept at zero degrees Fahrenheit. However, the quality will decrease over time.

    Tip

    • Keeping an inventory of the foods in your freezer chest will allow you to keep track of how long each food item has been in there so your family will know what needs to be consumed or thrown out, according to WVU.
