How to Use Dry Chlorine to Purify Drinking Water

Dry chlorine, or calcium hypochlorite, may be used to purify water. In an emergency, or when you do not have access to clean water, dry chlorine is a viable way to produce water safe for drinking. Because dry chlorine comes in powdered form, it may be stored for up to 10 years if kept in a cool, dry container.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure dry chlorine. You can find dry chlorine at pool supply and hardware stores or through an online merchant.

    • 2

Make the chlorine solution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the solution consists of 1 teaspoon of dry chlorine mixed with 2 gallons of water.

    • 3

Add the chlorine solution to water. The EPA recommends a ratio of 1 part chlorine solution to 100 parts of water to be treated. For example, 1 cup treats 6 1/4 gallons.

    • 4

Let the treated water sit. To alleviate the smell of chlorine, allow the treated water to sit for at least 30 minutes. The chlorine will evaporate over time, and mixing the water helps facilitate this process.

Add a vitamin C tablet. Vitamin C helps remove the smell and taste of chlorine. The vitamin bonds with the chlorine to produce a harmless salt that sits at the bottom of the container.
