How to Make Vegetable Wash
It's always a good idea to rinse your produce with water before cutting, peeling, or eating - however, you can remove significantly more contaminants by using a vegetable wash. Fruits and vegetables can be handled, waxed, and even dropped on the ground before they reach your grocer, and water alone can't always remove all of the grime. 1
ASSEMBLE YOUR SUPPLIES
To create your vegetable wash, you'll need 1 Tablespoon of fresh squeezed lemon or grapefruit juice, 2 Tablespoons of white vinegar, 1 cup of water, and a small plastic spray bottle. Wash the bottle with hot, soapy water before using and rinse thoroughly. -
2
MIX UP THE WASH
Open the spray bottle and pour in the water. Add the citrus juice and vinegar, close the bottle, and shake thoroughly. That's it! -
3
ENJOY CLEAN FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Your vegetable wash will last up to two weeks in the refrigerator. If you find that you're not using it all before it's time to mix up a new batch, simply scale the recipe down. To use the wash, first spray the fruits and vegetables, turning them to make sure they are completely coated. Leave on about 30 seconds. For sturdy items such as carrots or lemons, scrub gently with a vegetable brush then rinse. For more delicate items such as strawberries or mushrooms, skip the scrubbing and just rinse thoroughly.
