How to Prevent Mold on Food

Molds are tiny fungi that reproduce by releasing spores into the environment. Spores can land on anything and grow to form new mold fungus if the environment is moist and warm. In some cases, mold can flourish even at refrigerator temperatures. Mold can cause allergic reactions or respiratory ailments in some people. Since some types of mold can also produce a substance called mycotoxins that can seriously affect a person's health, it is important to prevent mold on food. By observing certain safety guidelines when buying, storing or preparing foods, you can help to prevent mold from forming on food.

      Inspect food for signs of mold before you buy it. Noticing any problems before you buy food can help you to avoid bringing mold into your kitchen where it can then spread.

      Avoid buying more food than you can consume in a short period. Foods like fresh produce and meat can spoil quickly and cause a mold problem. If you do find moldy food in the refrigerator or pantry, throw it out and clean the area.

      Prevent the spread of mold in the kitchen by frequently cleaning pantries, dishcloths, mops and sponges. Check for any musty smells on wash dishcloths, mops and sponges. Wash them often to keep them from spreading mold.

      Clean the inside of the refrigerator every two months with a solution of approximately 1 to 2 tbsp.of baking soda to one quart of water. Use clean water to rinse area, then dry it. Check the rubber gasket around the refrigerator door for signs of black mold. Clean the gasket with a mixture of about 4 tsp. of bleach to one quart of water. Scrub the scum off with a brush, wipe it down with clean water, then dry it.

      Keep your home at the proper humidity level. Since mold can flourish in a moist and warm environment such as kitchens, it is advisable to have the humidity level in your home below 40 percent.

      Store leftovers and uneaten food from jars in tightly covered storage containers and refrigerate them at once. Use or consume leftovers within three to four days to prevent mold growth.

      Cover serving dishes and trays to protect food from exposure to spores. Keep fruits, vegetables and salads fresh by using plastic wrap to cover them.
