Things You Wear in a Science Class
Different branches of science are taught at different school levels. On the higher grade levels, science classes will be more in-depth. Students are required to wear the proper uniform when attending a science class and use other safety gear to protect them and laboratory equipment. A science classroom is different from a regular one. There are no desks, but rather long worktables. Stools are provided to make it easy for students to get in and out of their seats.-
Laboratory Gowns
-
White laboratory gowns are usually a prerequisite science class uniform. A laboratory gown usually has long sleeves, two deep front pockets, and a small pocket on the chest for pens. The gown's buttons are in front. Some schools do not require the wearing of a laboratory gown. In this case, wear comfortable clothes that fit; they shouldn't be too loose and shouldn't have too much bulk or embellishments that can get caught in lab equipment. Jeans or thick pants are advisable to give some protection for your legs in case of spillage. If possible, avoid wearing skirts, particularly billowy ones and shorts as these items of clothing expose a lot of skin that may get in contact with harmful chemicals. An old shirt will long sleeves will do nicely in place of a laboratory gown to protect your arms.
Footwear
-
There is always the danger of spillage when handling chemicals. Regular shoes with non-skid soles are recommended when inside a science class or laboratory. Open-toed shoes and sandals, and shoes with woven uppers are not recommended. This is to protect your feet from the danger of corrosive and irritating chemical substances that may spill during handling.
Protection for the Face
-
Safety glasses with side shields are strictly required when attending a science class whether you will be handling chemicals or not. A face mask is optional but may be needed when you are attending a chemistry class where you will be handling chemicals. Avoid using contact lenses when attending a science class where you will be handling chemicals as some of the chemicals are harmful to the plastic used in contact lenses. Chemical vapors may also enter your eyes and collect under the contact lenses.
Other Protective Items to Wear and Some Precautions
-
An apron and latex gloves may also be required. This is dependent on the science class that you are attending. Tie your long hair neatly at the back of your head. If possible, wear a hair net. Remove all pieces of jewelry when you are inside a science classroom. There are materials and substances that can corrode metals. Necklaces, dangling earrings and bracelets can get caught in sensitive and costly laboratory equipment.
