Grants for HIV Patients
Patients diagnosed with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) may benefit from a number of programs that are designed to make life a little easier for those who are in need. These federally based grant programs provide assistance with housing costs, the costs of food and medical care, which many patients with HIV may struggle to pay for because of a decreased ability to work. These grants, unlike loans, do not require repayment.-
Housing Assistance Grants
-
The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers a variety of grant programs distributed on a state level that may be of assistance for those diagnosed with HIV. One of the largest expenses that many people struggle to pay for is the high cost of housing, particularly if their health prevents them from working full time. HUD provides a number of grant programs that offer assistance toward the cost of rent; making structural additions or improvements to existing homes in order to make them more wheelchair friendly; and down payment assistance that can be used toward purchasing a less expensive home. Interested applicants will need to apply directly through their local HUD office to see if they qualify.

Medical Assistance Programs
-
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers assistance to help cover the costs of medical care to low income Americans with no or inadequate health insurance coverage. These programs, including Medicaid and Medicare are made available through grant funding that is distributed to each state. Individuals who meet income qualifications can apply to receive no cost health care coverage. This can be particularly beneficial to those diagnosed with HIV because of the high cost of medical treatment and the prescription drugs that are necessary to control the disease. Those who wish to apply for Medicare or Medicaid funding must contact their local office of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
-
The lack of proper nutrition can wreak havoc on those with even a healthy immune system. Those with compromised immune systems, such as those who have been diagnosed with HIV, must insure that they eat properly in order to give the body the energy it needs to fight off viruses and illness. The U.S. Department of Human Services offers a program funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture called SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). This grant based program is designed to help those who may be at risk for poor nutrition to buy healthy foods. This program is available to individuals who meet qualifying income standards, and funds are distributed on a monthly basis through an electronic benefit card. The amount of funds awarded will vary based on income. Individuals who are interested in applying for SNAP benefits must apply directly through their local U.S. Department of Human Services office.
