Grants for Scoliosis Research

Scoliosis is a medical condition that involves curvature of the spine. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, three to five of every 1,000 children suffer from scoliosis. Several annual grants to fund scoliosis research. While each grant has its own specific guidelines and requirements, research foci can include evidence-based medicine, early-onset scoliosis treatment, how osteoporosis relates to scoliosis and sagittal imbalance.
  1. Alf Nachemson Evidence-Based Medicine Research Grant

    • The Scoliosis Research Society offers several grants to fund scoliosis research. The Alf Nachemson Evidence-Based Medicine Research Grants fund projects with the goal of discovering ways to improve care for patients with spinal deformities, according to grant guidelines. Proposals can include randomized trials, meta-analyses of previous studies and patient-centered clinical studies. Research topics can include evaluations of existing diagnostic tests' accuracy and precision, prognostic markers, and therapeutic and surgical methods, according to grant guidelines. Grants range up to $50,000 per year over a two-year period.

    Small Exploratory Research Grants

    • The Scoliosis Research Society's Small Exploratory Research Grants fund new or starting investigators. Proposals must include a preliminary research idea to be developed into a study. To qualify, proposals must be able to generate pilot data that can be used to apply for future, larger grant funding. Funding is only available for research projects that are not yet underway. Applications are evaluated according to three criteria, including significance of the topic, clarity of the research approach and feasibility of the project, according to grant guidelines. Grants range up to $10,000 over a one-year funding period.

    New Investigator Research Grants

    • The Scoliosis Research Society offers New Investigator Research Grants. To qualify, investigators must not be the recipients of funds from any other national grantor, such as the National Institutes of Health, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation or the National Science Foundation. Grants range up to $25,000 per year over a maximum two-year period. Proposals are not required to include preliminary data, although preference may be given to research proposals that include preliminary results.

    BSRF General Research Grants

    • The British Scoliosis Research Foundation offers three annual research grants. Scientists, clinicians, nurses, psychologists or physiotherapists working in the United Kingdom and internationally are eligible to apply. Small Exploratory Grants range up to £15,000 over a one-year period and do not require pilot data. New Investigation Grants offer up to £40,000 over two years. Grants support junior scientists and preliminary data is preferred. Major Research Grants award up to £100,000 over two years and fund research into spinal deformities.
