NIH Postdoctoral Grants

The National Institutes of Health or NIH is the premier funding source for medical research in the country. With annual awards reaching to more than $28 billion in grants to over 3,000 institutions, the NIH funds medical research to improve the health of the nation as a whole, according to the NIH website. Several grants fund postdoctoral candidates and fellows. Most postdoctoral grants support expenses such as cost-of-living stipends, training costs and tuition.

Postdoctoral Research Training for Obstetricians and Gynecologists

• The NIH's Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development offers the Postdoctoral Research Training for Obstetricians and Gynecologists grant program. The grant's goal is to "prepare qualified obstetricians and gynecologists to assume leadership roles related to the Nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research agenda through a training program," according to the grant guidelines. Grant proposals must include collaborative efforts between obstetrics and gynecological departments and epidemiological or preventative medicine departments. Funds support postdoctoral fellows with cost-of-living expenses, training costs and tuition, up to $23,850 per year. Institutions of higher education, tribal colleges and universities, Hispanic-, Alaska Native- and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions, nonprofits and community-based organizations are eligible to apply.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Postdoctoral Fellows

• The NIH offers Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Postdoctoral Fellows grants. According to grant guidelines, the program's purpose is to support "promising Fellowship Applicants with the potential to become productive, independent investigators in scientific health-related research fields." Grants fund stipends to postdoctoral fellows to help defray cost-of-living expenses. Awards also fund tuition and fees up to $16,000 per year. Public and private colleges and universities, nonprofits, historically Black institutions of higher education, for-profit organizations and government agencies are eligible to apply.

NIAD Research Scholar Development Award

• The NIH and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases offer the NIAD Research Scholar Development Award grant program. The goal of the program is to "increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented NIH-supported independent investigators that will address the health needs of the nation" and to "facilitate the transition from a postdoctoral research position to an independent research position," according to the grant guidelines. Grant funds support clinical or research postdoctoral candidates with less than five years of post-degree training. The grant awards up to $150,000 in the first year and up to $100,000 in the second year. Colleges, universities, nonprofits, for-profits, Hispanic-serving institutions and government agencies are eligible to apply.
