Drug Information on Benzoic Acid Solution
Skin conditions are sometimes treated with topical drug combinations. One example is a medication that contains benzoic and salicylic acids. The benzoic part of the solution fights bacterial infections, and the salicylic acid ingredient accelerates the shedding of rough or dead skin.-
Function
-
This benzoic acid solution treats burns, eczema, insect bites and fungal conditions. It fights infection, reduces inflammation and relieves irritated skin. Initial contact creates warmth, and the area may tingle and burn for a few minutes. Avoid applying the solution to the eye, nose and mouth areas; the product is for skin use only.
Considerations
-
Side effects associated with using a benzoic and salicylic ointment require immediate medical attention. These are severe burning or irritation of the skin and may also include allergic reactions including the appearance of hives, stressed breathing or swelling of the face, throat, tongue or lips.
Warnings
-
If you are pregnant or nursing or are allergic to polyethylene glycol, do not use a benzoic solution. Also, if you experience a severe skin reaction, swelling, hives or respiratory problems, seek immediate medical care. In addition, some over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, minerals or herbal products have the potential to interact with the solution. These and all prescriptions should be discussed with your doctor before using the topical ointment.
