    Identification

    • Hydroxyz is a prescription drug that is considered an antihistamine. As such, it blocks the body's natural histamine response. In doing so, it treats anxiety, relieves tension and can be used as a sedative. It can relieve the symptoms of allergies and treat motion sickness. Other uses of this drug can be determined by your doctor.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects that can occur as a result of using Hydroxyz include dizziness, drowsiness and dry mouth. Though not serious initially, these side effects can become serious if they worsen or begin to regularly occur. In that case, contact your doctor immediately and stop using Hydroxyz.

    Severe Side Effects

    • In more rare cases, the use of Hydroxyz can lead to the following serious side effects: involuntary body movements, extreme drowsiness, rash, hives, severe itching, swelling of the face or lips, and difficulty breathing. Stop using Hydroxyz immediately and seek medical attention if any of the side effects occur.

    Drug Interactions

    • Hydroxyz can interact with a number of medications in negative ways. Always seek a complete list of possible drug interactions before regularly using it. Hydroxyz has been known to react poorly with Ambien, Cymbalta, Lamictul, Flexeril, Lasix, Lunesta, Topamax and Zyrtec. Discuss your current drug use with your doctor before taking Hydroxyz.
