The Side Effects of Cifran

Cifran is an antibiotic medication used in the treatment of infections of the skin, abdomen, lower respiratory tract, bone and joints and urinary tract. The drug works by killing and preventing the growth of bacteria in the body, which in turn forces the body to rid itself of infection. As is the case with most antibiotic medications, a number of side effects have been associated with use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some of these side effects include allergic reaction, tightening of the chest, skin rash, hives, shortness of breath and swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue and face. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using Cifran, they only affect a small number of users. If you experience any of these side effects, contact your doctor for an adjusted treatment method.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using Cifran. Some of these side effects include collapsing of the circulatory system, swelling of the throat, yellowing of the skin and eyes, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness and drowsiness, and migraine. These side effects are also rare and do not affect a large amount of users. If you experience any of these side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

    Important Safety Information

    • Cifran is meant only in the treatment of bacterial infections and will not treat any type of viral infections (such as HIV or the common cold). Never use this medication near the eyes as it can cause severe vision problems in some users. Cifran has been known to cause increased dizziness and drowsiness in some users, and it is strongly recommended that users do not operate any type of machinery throughout the course of treatment.

    Use

    • Always use Cifran exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages larger than what has been recommended on the label. The medication can be taken with or without food; however, it should never be taken with dairy products. The calcium present in dairy products makes it harder for the body to absorb the medication and could negate the healing effects. Cifran should always be stored away from sources of moisture and at room temperature.

    Warning

    • If an overdose or negative drug interaction is suspected, contact the poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Cifran is meant in the treatment of bacterial infections only and should not be used for any other medical condition unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
